How to fight bait disease

Introduction

Esca disease is a complex disease caused by numerous pathogenic fungi that is expressed with leaf symptoms until the death of the plant itself.

The entry of pathogens occurs mainly through pruning wounds. Due to their prolonged susceptibility, it is necessary to protect them with a long-lasting product.

It is a typical vine disease caused by a complex of numerous fungal species (Phaeomoniella chlamydospora, Phaeoacremonium minimum and Fomitiporia mediterranea). This disease is present in every geographical area where vines are grown.

There are more sensitive varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, but no variety can be defined as immune.

How to prevent esca disease?

The fight against vine esca disease is mainly preventive.

The means of control available are very few, in recent years a fight has been developed through the use of antagonistic fungi.

Immediately after pruning, intervene by spraying the shoot, and in particular on the pruning wounds, a suspension of:

Use a volume of water of not less than 400 l/Ha to distribute at least 1 kg of Remedier per hectare, taking care to direct the jet of the nozzles as much as possible on the pruning cuts and apply it by the beginning of the vine weeping.

The two active fungi (Trichoderma Asperellum and Trichoderma Gamsii) are unable to enter the lymphatic vessels of the shoot unlike the parasite, so they are unable to have a curative action, and for this reason they must be administered as close as possible to the pruning to hinder the entry of the pathogen.

After the first intervention, in vineyards at high risk of disease (replanting on heavily affected vineyards, high presence of disease in the surrounding vineyards), it will be advisable to perform a second treatment within the budding phase, at the same dosage, to colonize the wounds.

In case of rain, the treatment must be repeated within 6 hours of application.

Budding phase

During the budding phase of the plant, it is advisable to intervene with:

·Vitaseve: to 500 gr/hl

·Welgro Complex: at 200 gr/hl

·Barrier: to 200 ml/hl

This intervention serves to promote the regeneration of the cambium damaged by abiotic stress and damage from esca disease, it also facilitates lymphatic circulation and improves flowering and increases the length of the rachis.
