Super-intensive olive grove planting: tips and strategies

Innovation in Agriculture: Economic and Efficient Strategies to Maximize Water Resources in a Super-Intensive Olive Grove

In the heart of the countryside of Venosa, in the province of Potenza, there is a state-of-the-art farm that cultivates super-intensive olive trees of the Arbequina variety. With a 4x1.5 meter plant in size and a five-year age, the company is adopting innovative strategies to address climate challenges and optimize the use of water resources.

Recently, the company has implemented an advanced protocol using a series of treatments starting from the flowering stage of the olive trees. These treatments involve the use of products such as Megafol, Mc Cream, Mc Set, and Talete, which are all available on our website perfarelalbero.it.

Protocol Foliar treatment

During the flowering phase, the following were applied:

Mc Set: 2 liters per hectare

Megafol: 2 liters per hectare

Subsequently, after about 15 days, in the post-fruit set and growth phase, three treatments were carried out with:

Megafol: 2 liters per hectare

Mc Cream: 2 liters per hectare

The results were remarkable, with a clear difference between the treated and control areas. These applications have helped to reduce thermal and water stress, which is particularly relevant in periods of high temperatures and limited water availability. The treated plants showed better bud and fruit growth than the untreated areas, suggesting that such methods can improve water use.

Thales and the Efficiency of Water Use

Another experiment conducted in the same company involved the Talete product, applied directly to the soil through fertigation. Applications began in the post-fruit set phase, around the end of May, and were repeated every ten days for a total of four applications, reaching 20 liters per hectare.

Thales is a product of natural origin that improves the efficiency of water use. The company's managers observed that, as early as one or two days after application, the plants showed active vegetative growth. This stimulus led to continue with subsequent applications, highlighting a clear difference between the treated and untreated areas.

Improved vegetative growth with the use of Thales is a promising indicator for the future, allowing for more efficient management of water resources. Even in conditions of equal amounts of water distributed, the use of Thales allowed for superior growth, suggesting that, for super-intensive crops, it is possible to reduce water use while maintaining compact and healthy vegetation.

The innovative use of products such as Megafol, Mc Cream, Mc Set, and Talete represents a cost-effective and efficient strategy to address the current challenges in the agricultural sector. Optimising the use of water resources is essential to ensure sustainable and profitable production, especially in areas with scarce water availability. The experience of this farm is an excellent example of how innovation and research can lead to extraordinary results, promoting more sustainable and profitable agricultural practices. It is important to note that, due to the high temperatures, the plants are further subjected to stress of an abiotic nature, making the application of targeted treatments to improve the resistance and resilience of olive trees even more crucial.

The introduction of innovative water management methods and the adoption of specific treatments during critical growth phases are essential for agricultural success, especially in conditions of limited water resources and temperatures that are now too high. The farm's experience demonstrates how a scientific and targeted approach can positively influence the resilience and productivity of olive trees. The practice of targeted treatments not only improves plant growth and health, but also helps mitigate abiotic stresses caused by adverse weather conditions. These efforts illustrate the importance of sustainable agricultural strategies that respond to contemporary environmental challenges.
