Potassium nitrate: what it is and what it is used for in agriculture

As we all know, plants need nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium for healthy and vigorous growth. One of the fastest and most effective ways to immediately provide two of these elements (nitrogen and potassium) is to use potassium nitrate, one of the most widely used fertilizers in agriculture, due to the wide variety of crops on which it can be used.

What are its advantages in agriculture?

What is potassium nitrate used for in agriculture?

Potassium nitrate (chemical formula KNO3) is one of the most widespread fertilizers used by farmers, thanks to the two fundamental macro elements it transfers to plants:

  • nitrogen, essential for growth
  • potassium, which increases the yield of the plant and the quality of its fruits, as well as promoting resistance to biotic and abiotic stress

Although in its most refined forms, potassium nitrate is perhaps one of the most expensive fertilizers, its use is preferred because it is one of the fertilizers that is in fact richer in nutrients and more balanced: for example, potassium nitrate is preferred to potassium sulfate because it has a faster assimilation by plants.

Among the characteristics that distinguish potassium nitrate is that it makes the ions of which it is composed completely assimilable by the plant according to its needs, thus reducing the use of additional sources of potassium, such as sulfate. But the positive notes of potassium nitrate, used since ancient Roman times, do not stop there:

What are the benefits of potassium nitrate?

Let's start by saying that potassium facilitates the opening and closing of the plant's stomata, improving transpiration and thus reducing its demand for water. In addition, the high solubility in water makes potassium nitrate widely used in fertigation, a practice that also avoids product waste, maximizing its yield. Its reduced salinity, in addition, allows the reduction of irrigation operations, in cases where there is a need to wash the soil of excess salts.

How is potassium nitrate used?

Let's start by saying that to ensure an excellent result, it is necessary to make sure to apply the fertilizer taking care to distribute it over the entire surface. In this way, the amount of nutrients will be divided equally. Our advice is to proceed with fertilization in the period in which the plant absorbs nutrients at its best.

This period varies according to the reference crop, but in general we can say that the right period is the one after the early stages of development, when the plant begins to have attached fruits. The goal of potassium nitrate will be to increase the quality characteristics of the final product.

However, it is necessary to ensure a correct dosage at the time of its use: an excessive dose of potassium nitrate, in fact, could cause excess salinity in the soil and, consequently, risk damaging the plant.

To be used in fertigation, the product we suggest is

Being free of conditioners such as sodium, sulfur or chlorine, the potassium nitrate we have selected excludes any risk of burns and desiccation. The solubility of this fertilizer guarantees, which exceeds that of potassium sulfate up to 3-4 times, guarantees an excellent level of nutrient absorption.

For a bottom fertilization, on the other hand, we recommend using
