The codling moth (cydia pomonella) is a carpophagous moth that lives mainly at the expense of pome fruits: apple and pear, but it can also cause damage to walnuts, persimmons and medlars. It overwinters in the form of a mature larva protected by a cocoon in the crevices of the bark; The adults of codling moth are small butterflies that come out in mid-April, with temperatures over 15 degrees, at sunset they mate and after a few days they lay eggs. The first eggs are laid on leaves or twigs  near the fruiting, and then shelled in search of fruits to parasitize. A second generation at the end of June and a third generation around mid-August. Damage occurs only on the fruits, at any stage of growth and maturation given the trophic action of the larvae that feed by digging tunnels inside the fruits.

When to do codling moth treatments?

As a guideline, the three dates indicated may indicate a reference for the defense, but it is very approximate. It is therefore not possible to provide a defense calendar, so it is necessary, for a guided and targeted fight, to monitor the trend of the population in the field with the use of three to five SuperCarpo pheromone traps per hectare.

Insecticides against codling moth of the apple tree

When the threshold of capture (two adults captured per trap in a week) or damage (0.5 - 1% of initial penetration holes) is exceeded, it will be necessary to intervene promptly with:

  • Black Jak at 200 ml/hl (for acidification and transport)
  • Laser  at 30-40 ml/hl   (or Costar WG  at 100 gr/hl)
  • Lecithin 80 MS at 150 ml/hl (to increase the adhesion of the solution and avoid dripping and product losses).

Alternatively:

  • Black Jak 200cc +
  • Costar WG at 100 gr+
  • Lecithin 80MS at 200 cc.

(The persistence of Costar is shorter than Laser, and therefore also the coverage), to be on the safe side it is appropriate to retort.

Another means of defense is sexual confusion which can be implemented through the use of:

diffusers with controlled release of a synthetic pheromone chemically analogous to the natural one of Cydia pomonella; The application of the diffusers should be carried out immediately before the start of the wintering generation activity. In all cases, however, it must be considered that the sexual confusion technique is not an alternative to control with phytosanitary products, but complementary.

For microbiological control, it is possible to use a virus-based formulation:

  • Madex Top (commercial formulation containing granulosis virus specific for C. pomonella) or
  • Madex Twin (product that has an action on both codling moth and Grapholita molesta)

They can be distributed from the onset of the first generation with a dose of 100 ml/ha (subsequent interventions every 8 days). The virions, once ingested, cause the death of larvae in about one or two days with a consequent strong killing action on the population.
